I’m always trying to find ways to make the Ocean Buffer Project as low-impact and accessible as possible, which means reusing, repurposing, and working with what already exists. So when I realised I needed a compost bin for all the algae scraps, I couldn’t justify buying a fancy new one.
I’d even made sure that the paper towel I was buying to clean up with was unbleached, bamboo and compostable… still, not much use without a compost bin.
Then, someone on a local Facebook page was giving away a dustbin with snap handles. One thing this project has given me is a fierce respect for Marketplace. I don’t use social media apart from project stuff these days, but I have lost some hours trawling for freebies!

Anyway, the bin: perfect size, sturdy plastic, still had its lid. I messaged straight away and picked it up that afternoon.
